LAPPS Code of Ethics

As a member of LAPPS, I will:
  • Provide the most experienced, dependable and compassionate care I possibly can for every pet entrusted to me.
  • Conduct myself professionally, honestly and with integrity, and to employ only those who will do the same.
  • Treat other pet sitters the same way I would want to be treated--with respect and good will.
  • Keep my knowledge of pet care current and do everything I can to improve the services I provide.
  • Refrain from dishonoring the profession by resorting to defamation or dishonest tactics to acquire clients.
  • Refrain from maligning boarding kennels even if some may not be respectful of our profession.
  • Encourage my clients and the community to be responsible and humane pet owners.
  • Maintain all client information confidential and use lock boxes or keep client keys locked away and coded for security.
  • Protect the client's home, pets, and possessions by assuming every possible precaution.
  • Operate my business professionally and with integrity.
  • Support and promote the pet sitting industry within my community.
  • Maintain (and be able to provide proof of) current business licensing and liability insurance (and bonding, if applicable).
  • Uphold all federal, state, county, city, and home owner association laws pertaining to the care of pets.
  • Provide a comprehensive service contract for clients, and keep policies and disclaimers up-to-date.
  • Report any and all potentially dangerous, insecure, or illegal situations to the client and/or, when necessary, to the police.
  • Ensure that my clients have provided for emergency veterinary care for their pets by signing a Veterinary Release.
  • Belong to and maintain current membership in at least one national pet sitting organization.
  • Belong to and maintain current membership or volunteer for a local shelter, rescue, or animal welfare organization, as a means to give back to the community.
  • Provide references to clients during initial consultation, if requested.
  • Provide written descriptions of services and rates, either in print or via a website.
  • Visit the client's home prior to the first assignment to meet pets and obtain detailed instructions for their care.
  • Have a positive attitude during initial meeting with client, be competent and confident in my services.
  • Keep regular business hours, answer inquiries and complaints promptly.
  • Provide client survey and/or rating form.
  • Have a contingency plan for pet care in case of inclement weather, personal illness, or other emergencies.
  • Keep Pet First Aid certification through the American Red Cross current.
